In the earlier days of our country, most people had built-in gathering places: faith-based organizations, civic clubs, neighborhood organizations and other community institutions. Since the late 20th Century, however, participation in these organizations has declined dramatically.
Society lost something very important when we stopped gathering this way. As those shared spaces disappeared or lost membership, trust declined, not because people changed, but because strangers stayed strangers. You can’t build trust with people you never meet.
We are at a pivotal moment. Many of the forces shaping modern life profit from keeping us isolated, scrolling, consuming, and interacting through screens rather than in person. Strong communities don’t generate clicks—they generate conversations, friendships, and mutual support. “In a club, you do not look at where someone came from; you look at the chess board, the running trail, or the garden you are both working on.” — Anonymous
The answer isn’t only to spend less time online. It’s to spend more time together. Join a club. Sing in a choir. Join a faith community, a service organization, a sports league, or a community group. Clubs and civic groups bridge cultural divides by uniting people around shared goals, common hobbies, and collaborative community service. Aqus Community’s ‘Just Join Something’ initiative is taking root. People are understanding the value of belonging and are joining.
